Being dragged down the street by your own dog is miserable — and it quietly shrinks your dog's world, because walks get shorter, tenser and rarer. The good news: lead-pulling is one of the most fixable behaviour problems there is. Here's the method that works, step by step.
First, understand why they pull
Two reasons. One: the opposition reflex — dogs instinctively push against pressure, so a tight lead literally triggers more pulling. Two: pulling works — every time your dog pulls and you keep walking, the pulling got them where they wanted to go. Fix both and the pulling stops.
Step 1: Change the equipment
You cannot out-muscle a determined Shepherd or Lab, and pulling against a collar risks their neck. A front-clip no-pull harness redirects a pulling dog sideways instead of letting them lean forward into the pressure — it removes the physics that makes pulling effective, from the very first walk. Pair it with a fixed-length lead (a 180cm heavy-duty lead is ideal — never a retractable, which literally teaches that pulling extends the lead).
Step 2: Stop being a tow truck
The moment the lead goes tight: stop dead. Silent, boring, planted. The walk only resumes when the lead slackens. Your dog learns the equation within days: tight lead = world stops, loose lead = world continues.
Step 3: Pay the position
Every time your dog is walking beside you on a loose lead, mark it ("yes!") and reward. Most owners only react to bad position — flip it. The side of your leg becomes the most rewarding place in the world.
Step 4: Burn the fuel first
A dog with a full tank pulls. Ten minutes of sniff-work before the walk — a snuffle mat works brilliantly — takes the frantic edge off so the training brain can switch on.
Step 5: Be boringly consistent
The method fails one way: sometimes letting the pulling work (because you're late, it's raining, whatever). Every inconsistent walk resets the clock. Two weeks of consistency beats six months of sometimes.
When to get help
