First: thank you. Rescue dogs are the best dogs — and the first 72 hours in your home matter more than everything you'll buy. So before the checklist, the golden rule: 3-3-3. Three days to decompress, three weeks to learn your routine, three months to feel at home. Go slower than feels necessary.
Before they arrive
Two-point security. Rescue dogs are flight risks in week one — many will bolt from fear at a noise that won't bother them a month later. Walk them on a collar AND harness with the lead (or a double-ended lead) attached to both. An escape-resistant harness plus a secure collar with an ID tag (legally required in the UK, with your name and address) is the single most important purchase.
A den, not just a bed. A quiet corner with a wipe-clean, bite-resistant mat — rescue dogs have accidents and chew when anxious; a washable setup means no frustration on either side.
Their old food. Whatever the rescue fed them, keep it for two weeks, then transition slowly. New home + new food = upset stomach, guaranteed.
The calming toolkit
Anxiety is the default setting for a rehomed dog. Licking and sniffing are dogs' built-in stress relief:
• A lick mat smeared with (xylitol-free) peanut butter during alone-time practice and grooming.
• A snuffle mat for meals — foraging is calming and slows anxious gulpers.
What to skip (for now)
Squeaky toys (overstimulating in week one), retractable leads (zero control with an unpredictable dog), the dog park (weeks away, minimum), and — controversially — the fancy bed. Many rescues won't touch a plush bed at first. Start simple.
Routine is the real product
Same wake time, same meal times, same walk route for the first fortnight. Predictability tells an anxious dog the chaos is over. A scheduled feeder helps here — meals land at the same minute every day even when your shifts don't cooperate.
